About Us

In 2012, a small group of artist printmakers who had met at Red Hot Press in Southampton came together to establish Cowprint Artists’ Group. Over the years, our community has grown to over 30 members, and we have collaborated on numerous exciting printmaking projects, including international print exchanges and successful exhibitions.
In the summer of 2021, Cowprint Artists’ Group became independent from Red Hot Press. The name “Cowprint” originated from the location where the group first met – the old Cattle Market, where Red Hot Press occupied the Corn Exchange.
Our group meets monthly in Southampton to discuss printmaking and collaborate on new projects. We also organise monthly sketching sessions in and around Southampton to inspire new creative ideas. We welcome new members who are interested in joining our supportive community of printmakers.
In 2020, Cowprint Artists’ Group collaborated with Inky Hands Print Studio in Plymouth, Massachusetts, USA, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower’s sailing from Southampton in 1620. We created two artists’ concertina books and organised two exhibitions, featuring prints from 40 artists from both sides of the Atlantic. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Cowprint exhibition in Southampton at God’s House Tower was postponed until the summer of 2021. However, the Inky Hands exhibition was successfully held during the 400th-anniversary celebrations in Plymouth. We celebrated 10 years of printmaking with an exhibition at the Southampton City Gallery which ran from November 2022 until February 2023.

Purpose of the Group

Through regular meetings, whether virtually or in person, we offer a platform for members to share their work and receive feedback and support from fellow printmakers. We encourage the exchange of information, including technical problem-solving and the sharing of resources for printing materials and equipment.
We also offer opportunities for learning through visiting speakers, and we organise sketching outings to inspire new ideas and creativity.
Our group has a strong focus on joint projects, such as the 20:20 print exchange and Mayflower 400, as well as finding and organising exhibiting and selling opportunities, including at Hilliers and God’s House Tower, and the local Wayzgoose.
As a community, we pool resources and seek member discounts from printmaking suppliers.
We welcome new members of any level of expertise who are interested in sharing their creative process, tools, techniques, reference books, and frustrations related to printmaking.
With the aim of maintaining high standards of printmaking, our committee members reserve the right to run a selection process for exhibitions we hold.
Join our printmaking group today and become a part of our supportive and collaborative community of artists!
