Linocut

What got you into printmaking?

Initially, I experimented with a range of printmaking techniques whilst doing the Foundation and Diploma courses at Red Hot Press. I found that I like the versatility of linocut, which can produce simple, bold prints or achieve considerable delicacy and detail.

Where do you work and what equipment do you use?

I have a room set up for printing at home, with a Pooki Press hand lever press.

What inspires your printmaking?

I am prompted by a love of landscape and the natural world. I sometimes use a sketch made in situ as a starting point, or I take a photo for reference, and then adapt the image until it will work well as a print.

What do you find most challenging and what do you most love?

It can be difficult to achieve a balance between being sufficiently in control of the technique to realise the intended outcome and flexible enough to allow for some spontaneity. The process demands planning and accuracy while retaining an element of unpredictability. When things go well, it is hard to beat the delight of seeing a successful finished print revealed.

Where might people have seen your work?

I have shown work in HampshireDorset, Somerset and London. In 2024 I received the Mary and John Symons Memorial Award for best print at the St Barbe Open Exhibition.
